Places of interest in Spain – Basque region

Blessed by the wonderful nature, Basque region in Spain is a paradise for tourists. It is the most ideal place for holidaying in a quiet and beautiful environment. The stunningly beautiful sea and facility for water sports and other recreational facilities, villas just facing the beautiful sea, pubs and bars in plenty; these are some of the most inviting aspects of the tour of Basque region.

Brief introduction of Basque region:

Basque region is the place where ethnic people speaking Basque language live. These people are spread over different areas of Spain like the San Sebastian, Alava, etc. Now the government of Spain has recognized Basque language as an official language. The group of towns or villages where the Basque people live is called the Basque county.

This county consists of different towns or villages. So if one has to go to all these places, he has to visit all these towns or villages. Each of these villages or towns has many places of interest for the visitor. Planning a tour to these places would be difficult because there are so many places to see. It is therefore advisable that help of experienced travel agencies be taken. There are many travel agencies who conduct tours to several areas of this county. Depending on the individual taste, the tourists can prepare their tour dairy. The tourist guides are always at hand to help the tourists.

What are the places to see?

There are many beautiful beaches, churches, cathedrals and other monuments which would be of interest to the tourist. The renowned Guggenheim Museum and the Biscay Bridge which are located in Bilabo are some of the many places of interest. The other place which every tourist should see is the cave in Isturitz. One will be mesmerized by the work of art which has been carried out centuries ago. It is just unbelievably beautiful. The other places which are never missed by any tourist are the Andra Mari church and Santa Maria sanctuary. These are considered as the cathedral of Basque. Most of these monuments are built either in Romanesque or Gothic architecture which suggests the influence of these civilizations on the people of Spain. The churches and cathedral have immensely beautiful sculptures. To remind the visitors of the history of the Basque county, many museums have been established which have collections of works belonging to Basque culture including works of art and artifacts by these ethnic people.

Places of interest in Spain - Palma de Mallorca

Spend your leisure time on an island where everything around you is beautiful. If you want the vast sand, crystal clear sea water, beautiful nature around, enough avenues for water sports, places to dine and chat savoring the tasty traditional food and tasty wine; then just go to Palma de Mallorca. This is an island of the Mallorca province. Remember, this beautiful island has many more things to offer; beautiful coves, cathedrals, places to play and what not.

Let us just start our tour immediately. We are now in Placa d’Espanya. Oh! This is not a park. This is the Palma’s transport hub. Here you are connected by bus and trains. The two old buildings you see on either side are the café and the tourist information centre. There are large escalators. Just down below the lawn is the railway station. Of course the bus station is partially operational and it will be fully functional in just a short period of time.

Now we are in La Seu cathedral. The mosque which then existed in the place was converted to a cathedral in the year 1229 but unfortunately the work could not be completed till 1601. It was Gaudi who made some alterations and gave the cathedral the beautiful look which it has today. The park located near the cathedral has foundation stone of the city. In between these two, walls have been constructed which are called as ‘Town walls’. The town walls have a huge canopy which is decorated with blue and yellow diamonds. Perhaps one would feel a dearth of words to explain the beauty of this canopy.

Now we are in the old city. There is an adage ‘old is gold’; that is certainly true of Palma. As you drive across the old city, you will find beautiful buildings and arches on either side of the beautifully laid out roads. It is a pleasure to drive on these roads and a pleasure to watch these buildings. These buildings have diverse architectural beauty. The old city also has some ancient cathedrals, convents, parks, etc.

Now we are in the area where some of the monuments belonging to Moorish period have been preserved. The Arab bath for example, attracts a large number of visitors. There is a beautiful garden just by the side of the Arab bath. This Arab bath seems to have been planned very well. Enough space has been provided for light and air. Historians say that this Arab bath has been built in the 11th century.

Places of interest in Spain – Palafrugell

A place becomes popular not by how vast it is; but by how beautiful it is. In fact it is this factor which attracts tourists. This is true of Palafrugell. This town is an administered municipality and is located on the Costa Brava, near Comarca and Baix Emporda. The most pleasant climate of Palafrugell has attracted many tourists from most parts of Europe and America. In fact many of the tourists have made this town as their summer resort and that is Palafrugell.

What makes this place so popular?

As said earlier, basically it is the climate. The climate makes the tourist relaxed and rejuvenated. In addition to this is the beautiful beach. Of course it is busy, yet it is beautiful. The beach is very well maintained and it has all the facilities a tourist requires for recreation. Safety has been given prime importance. The coast also has many coves. It has a long walking path way where you can enjoy the natural beauty while relaxing your body.

What to see?

Actually Palafrugell is a medieval town which was fortified to guard against pirates. But now the fortification has been removed completely. The narrow cobbled roads have been  retained even to this day so that one can have a taste of medieval life.

Just go to Placa Nova, you will find the church of Saint Marti which is believed to have been built in the 11th century. It is really a beautiful church. Perhaps you would be at a loss if you miss this great church.

There was a time when Cork was largely used in bottles. One of the most reputed Cork manufacturing units was in Palafrugell. That was in the 18th century. However, with change in technology, this cork manufacturing unit has slipped into history. But the tower of the factory still remains to tell us the story. There is a museum in the factory premises which details the cork manufacturing process and a history of cork industry.

Never miss seeing the botanical garden called ‘Cap Riog’. This beautiful garden has many rare species of plants. Just take a stroll in this garden and be sure to be mesmerized by its beauty.

The town is very well connected by road and also by train. The city has many restaurants and pubs which serve some of the traditional foods of Palafrugell. Your stay is made comfortable by the villas, apartments and hotels which are in plenty.

Great parks of Madrid, Spain - Parque Juan Carlos 1

Madrid is the home for many historic monuments, the most ideal place for shopping. It also has many parks which add beauty to the city. One of the parks frequently visited by the tourists is mentioned here.

Parque Juan Carlos 1:

This Park is named after the king Juan Carlos 1 who is currently on the throne. The father of the king was in exile in Italy and during this period Juan Carlos was born. King Juan ascended to the throne in 1975.

This huge park measuring about 220 hectares has a golf ground which itself measures 60 hectares. The park is known to be one of the most beautiful parks in Spain. It is known for its lush greenery, very well planned rows of trees, etc.

Some even call this a theme park. The park is located at a place where the underground water is harnessed to grow the trees and plants. An artificial lake has been created to provide enough underground water to the park. It is a beautiful work of architecture.

Other attractions in the park:

The garden of three cultures is the most attractive part of this park. This theme has been depicted using the three beautifully landscaped areas. Each of the landscape is represented by three cultures namely, the Christian, Muslim and the Jewish culture. The Eden garden representing the Christian culture is depicted by the tree of knowledge and the tree of life. A beautiful structure has also been built to drive home the thought of this culture.

The Arab Garden is represented by a mosque like structure. Further, the Jewish culture is represented by various installations akin to Jewish philosophy. On the top of this is the Mexican corner which depicts the historic and also the mythic view of the park.

The other attraction of this park is the rows of olive trees. There are more than 2000 olive trees. About 10000 trees of other popular varieties are also found here. Varieties of shrubs are grown and it is estimated that there are about 100000 shrubs of different varieties. Another interesting aspect is that about 90000 different varieties of flowers are grown here.

Multimedia show of fountains (water and music) is the centre of attraction during the night time. Accommodation has been provided for about 9000 spectators to view this beautiful show. Enough provision has been made for jogging, walking, cycling and place for relaxing with kith and kin.

One will certainly find heaven in this garden.

Parc De la Ciutadella:

This huge park measuring about 30 hectares is the ‘never to miss’ place of Barcelona. It was actually a military area during the period of Felipe V. He actually wanted to construct a fortress in this area and he even demolished the nearby town for the purpose. However it was General Prim who demolished the fortress but retained the Presidential palace, chapel and the military stores. Later the government of Spain converted the place into a park. The park is famous for its rich vegetation, tall trees, beautiful flowers and other rare species of flora and fauna.

The uniqueness of this park is its aromatic grass on which one can relax, chat with near and dear ones, enjoy the guitar played for one’s enjoyment by artists, etc. You can go for a long walk. There is a zoo inside this park which every visitor should never miss. One can see the wild animals in their natural habitat. The sea is not far away from this park.

The park also has a zoological museum which interests every section of visitors. There is a huge lake which has facilities for boating. There are beautiful waterfalls and fountains. The entire park is luxuriously illuminated and it is a stunningly beautiful sight at night. There are also many interesting works of sculpture including metallic cat and General Prim’s statue which is surrounded by beautiful flowers. In short, the park is a world in itself.

Visit some of the famous parks in Spain

Spain has many places which are of interest for a tourist. There are monuments like cathedrals, churches, castles, etc. which are of historical interest. There are stunningly beautiful beaches and tall mountains which make the tourist relaxed. There are great parks which have a collection of rare species of plants. Some of the renowned parks in Spain are briefly explained here:

Guell Park:

When we speak of parks, the first name which comes out is Guell Park. This park is the brain child of the genius architect of Spain Antanio Gaudi. There is an old adage ‘where there is a will, there is a way’ and Gaudi proved it. It was actually a place identified for a housing colony. The rocky area was converted to a park because the proposed housing colony failed to make a start. This beautiful park has been declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO. There are critics who call this park an ‘Outrageous modernism’. There are some who praise it because Gaudi has successfully redefined the concept of a ‘park’. It has beautiful works of sculpture by some of the renowned artists.

De la Ciudadella Park:

This is again a brain child of Antano Gaudi in the Barri Gotic region of Spain. This park has a great history. Actually it was a fortress built by King Felipe V in the year 1715. The fortress was built in the shape of a Star. Later Napoleon used it as a prison. Later in the year 1878, it was General Prim who completely destroyed the Citadel and in its place a statue of Genera Prim was installed. Later it was converted into a park by the Spanish Government. This huge park is considered as one of the best parks of Spain. It also has some monuments which are of historic importance.

There is also a museum inside the park. The park has a big lake and one can hire a boat. The garden section of the park has varieties of plants which are of interest for every visitor to the park. Universal exhibition was held in the year 1888 in this park. For purpose of the exhibition, many buildings were constructed. The interesting feature of this park is that the government of Spain has preserved all the historic buildings that were constructed in this park. This park has been appreciated by all the people. Most of the buildings in this park are in typical Spanish architecture. The park has many works of sculpture.
